Vanya Peltekova

Dr. Vanya Peltekova , Ph.D

Lead, BioLab, Research Operations, Ontario Institute for Cancer Research, Toronto

Biography

Dr.Vanya Peltekova is a scientist with many years of research experience in molecular biology, cell biology, genomics, pharmacology, working with diverse human diseases, including cancer. Before taking a position of Lead, BioLab Operations, platform at Ontario Institute for Cancer Research for laboratory training and knowledge transfer, Vanya was supervising the research activities of Dr. Tom Hudson’s Lab at OICR for more than 8 years. Her main research at OICR involved identification and characterization of novel colorectal cancer (CRC)-associated genes recognized by genome-wide association studies (GWAS). Her work led to the investigation of the functions of these genes and their role in the host’s immune response in the tumor microenvironment. Her research involved development and utilization of in vitro (cell-based) and mouse models to study the function of these genes. At OICR Vanya have trained and supervised over 50 students and research staff. Besides academia, she has worked as a Sr. Scientist for Ellipsis Biotherapeutics. Vanya’s research work has been published in Lancet, JBC, Nature Genetics. She is also the first author of 2 patents on the identification of the causative genes in Crohn’s disease and in colorectal cancer.
