Dr. Michelle Axford

Laboratory Molecular Genetics Fellow, The Hospital for Sick Children, Toronto

I earned my BSc in Biology with a specialization in genetics from McMaster University, and subsequently completed my PhD at the University of Toronto in 2012 in the Department of Molecular Genetics. My work involved attempting to elucidate the molecular mechanisms involved in the somatic and germline expansion of trinucleotide repeats that are associated with diseases such as myotonic dystrophy type 1 and spinocerebellar ataxia type 7.

After completion of my PhD I worked for Luminex Molecular Diagnostics as a research scientist for 3.5 years, aiding in the development of the Respiratory Pathogen Panel which was eventually FDA cleared. In 2016 I was accepted into a two year fellowship program at the Hospital for Sick Children through the Canadian College of Medical Genetics (CCMG), working in the Genome Diagnostics laboratory as a molecular genetics fellow. I am currently involved in various day-to-day laboratory activities such as clinical genetics test result interpretation, report writing, and troubleshooting.
